Video gameplay generally falls into two categories: single-player gaming and MMOGs (Massive Multiplayer Online Games.) Single player gaming is the most traditional form of gaming and what most people remember during their childhood. MMOGs, on the other hand, are video games that rely on a massive multiplayer experience that is facilitated through internet connections. There are pros and cons to MMOGs, but it is safe to say it is currently the leading form of gameplay and revered by millions upon millions of gamers across the globe.

MMOGs gameplay also allows players to spend less to garner entertainment. For a flat fee of about $50 per game, and the cost of an established internet connection players are given countless hours of gameplay. Unlike traditional, single-player games multiplayer games can be accessed over and over again.

As the online community and technology grows stronger games are becoming more and more advanced and lengthening the amount of gameplay that is available. Single-player games, on the other hand, have a point of completion. The lack of replay value on a single player game makes the experience much more expensive than one would find on a MMOGs platform.

The online gaming community is tightly knit, but that also means there is a lot of talking that goes on during online gaming sessions. MMOGs are notorious for having issues with “smack” talk and players getting a bit too riled up. There is also a very competitive nature in multiplayer online games that just don’t exist within single player games. The competitiveness of online games also can lead to video game addictions that can quickly take control of a person’s life. Characters in world of Warcraft have two different sides, either the Alliance or the Horde. Each side determines what race you want to be. It’s important to understand what each side is before you go any further in creating your character so let’s take a quick look.

The Alliance:

The Alliance is a variety of Humans, Gnomes, Night Elves, Dwarves, and Draenei. They all work together to defend their lands from the Hordes and other evils that have invaded on the land. Many look at the Alliance as pure and clean, their cities massive and pristine. Most of the Alliance races are very different looking then the horde, actually more civilized if you will. The Alliance races are sworn enemies to the Horde.

The Horde:

The Horde is very evil and barbaric. The horde has five races an they are the Orcs, the Undead, Trolls, Tauren (cow looking), and Blood Elves. The Horde struggle to survive in a land that constantly tries to reject them and use their limited history to build a massive empire. The Horde can be known as monstrous in appearance as most of their races do not resemble humanoids at all just the Blood Elves. The Horde races are sworn enemies to the Alliance.

Now it all comes down to what you want to fight for, the humanoid (The Alliance) or the monstrous (The Horde)? The game will change depending on what choice you make, but it’s up to you to choose whatever side you want to be on.

Once you know the side you want to pick then you can chose a race and a class. The classes are really a personal opinion on what you would want to be. I suggest you read through all the description for all the classes that you’re interested in and then pick the class that best suits your gaming style.

The Wii, Motion Technology and Gaming

On November 19th 2006, Nintendo changed the face of gaming by introducing motion technology to games consoles. This allowed for a whole range of different games which required a completely new type of gameplay. Instead of bashing buttons on a normal controller, gamers were given a remote. The remote’s movements are picked up by a sensor, allowing the Nintendo Wii to monitor and record the movements of the gamer. Virtual technology has been showcased in several futuristic films but the Wii was our first taste of motion sensor technology and a taster of things to come.

Before the Wii, no console had developed the technology to take advantage of motion sensors to monitor our movements. The Wii signalled the start of a new type of gaming where your actions could be imitated on the television screen right in front of you. They used this type of technology to develop many simple games such as Wii Sports, which has many short activities such as tennis and bowling. Since then, Nintendo have introduced many more games that require you to use the remote in completely different ways compared to a standard controller.

The main difference with the Wii is that it can require you to be much more active. With standard controllers, you can sit down and not move for several hours whilst gaming. With the Wii, some people prefer standing up as this gives them the room to perform a particular movement. This type of motion technology has attracted different types of people with the elderly being reported as enjoying a bit of Wii action in retirement homes.

This level of popularity has not gone unnoticed, which is evident with Xbox and PS3 releasing their own versions of motion technology. Xbox released their Kinect sensor in November 2010, where no controller was used in conjunction with the system and their main motto was ‘you are the controller’. The Kinect sensor is able to pick up your body movements without the need for a controller and it also incorporated hand movements to scroll through menus. This is very impressive technology and is a sign of the future.

PlayStation followed suit by releasing the PlayStation Move controller in September 2010. This is similar to the Wii remote as you have to use the controller to monitor your body movements. It received impressive reviews with many praising its accuracy and how it has been used to develop motion-based gameplay.

Nintendo started everything back in 2006 but the competition have raised the bar in terms of motion technology with more accurate and innovative products than the Wii. With the 4-year gap between release dates, this was inevitable but in 2012 we will see whether Nintendo can raise their level to continue the good work started by the Wii.

Rubik’s Cube – A Perfect Brain-Twister

Invented in 1974 by a Hungarian architect and sculptor Erno Rubik, the Rubik’s Cube has been gaining popularity ever since. It has turned into an icon of an intellectual game, which is widely known all over the world. People of any nationality can play this game, as it doesn’t require the knowledge of any specific language. Besides, it has a handy and bright design. Amazingly, but according to the statistic figures, more than 350 million Rubik Cubes have been sold since the start of the mass production. This toy always finds its place among the bestsellers and never falls out of the fashion.

Speedcubing is an international game that has no boundaries. The mature players can participate in regular world and local contests. There is no age or gender limit for the competitors – anyone can participate in the championships. There has been established the World Cube Association, which holds various speedcubing competitions. The first championship was held in 1982 in Budapest. Nowadays, it takes the true masters only several seconds to solve the Cube puzzle. The top three champions in 2011 according to the WCA are Feliks Zemdegs from Australia, Mats Valk from the Netherlands, and Nipat Charoenpholphant from Thailand.

The Rubik’s Cube Variations
The 2x2x2 Cube (also known as Pocket or Junior Cube) contains 8 corner pieces and has more than 3,5 million positions. Christian Kaserer is the world champion who solved this kind of Cube in 0.69 seconds in 2011.

The standard 3x3x3 Cube has 6 centres, 12 edges, and 8 corners and can have more than 4.3×10*19 positions. The holder of the world record in the 3x3x3 Cube solving is Feliks Zemdegs.

The 4x4x4 Cube (also known as Master Cube) comprises 24 centre pieces, 24 edge pieces, and 8 corners. It has 7.4×10*45 positions and there are no fixed centres in its structure. Mats Valk (the Netherlands) is a holder of a world record (30.02 sec.) set in 2011.

The 5x5x5 Cube (also known as Professor’s Cube) has 6 fixed centres, 48 centre and 36 edge pieces, and 8 corners. This variant of Cube has 2.8×10*74 positions. The abovementioned champion F.Zemdegs solved this Cube in 56.22 seconds in 2011.

The Pyraminx is shaped in a form of a tetrahedron. It has 4 axial and 6 edge pieces, and 4 trivial tips. It can have more than 900 thousand positions. In 2011 Yohei Oka (Japan) solved the Pyraminx in 1.93 seconds.

The Megaminx is shaped in a form of a dodecahedron. It contains 12 face centre pieces, 20 corner pieces, and 30 edge pieces. The number of positions escapes the imagination. The Swedish genius Simon Westlund solved the Megaminx in 42.28 seconds (2011).

The master solvers can take part in the so called blind competitions, where the puzzle is solved by memory. Moreover, the Cube puzzle can be solved not only with the help of fingers but also with the help of toes. There are even special contests among the people who can do it in such an extraordinary way.

As you can see the tendency of world record setting reveals that every year there appear Cube players who can solve the puzzle faster than their forerunners.

At the standard competition the time is limited to 10 minutes. There are two kinds of Rubik’s Cube timers: the Stackmat (measures the time under the 10 min. limit) and the stopwatch (measures the time that exceeds the 10 min. limit).
